Dedicated to achievement in surgical education, research and patient care

Established in 1914, Ohio State’s Department of Surgery has an impressive track record of producing leaders in surgery who are in demand across the country. Surgeons at Ohio State are at the forefront of advances in surgical techniques, including many minimally invasive procedures, which offer patients faster recoveries and less postoperative pain.

Our training also includes a mid-residency mentored research component that teaches young surgeon-scientists to think critically and problem solve while addressing pressing issues in the field. Ohio State’s unsurpassed clinical training, combined with state-of-the-art programs and the resources of a world-class medical facility, make it a highly effective, progressive and sought-after surgery department.

What we're excited about in the Department of Surgery

In addition to a residency in general surgery, we offer fellowships in multiple surgical subspecialties and mentored research opportunities in our Professional Development and Research Training Program. Additionally, our Translational Research and Health Services Research programs give surgeon-scientists additional opportunities to expand their skills.

Our Global Surgery Program, one of the few in the nation, provides rotations in both high-income and middle- to low-income countries that provide surgical trainees with a variety of unusual and educational surgical situations and experiences.
