Our surgical education team is extremely accomplished and prepared to train surgical educators to be capable and effective


Amalia Cochran, MD, MA Professor and Vice Chair of Education for the Department of Surgery

Oversees the department’s ACGME accreditation and coordinates residency and fellowship training programs in conjunction with the various program directors. Dr. Cochran is also responsible for cultivating research opportunities for trainees and leading a new Department of Surgery Education Council.



Ginny Bumgardner, MD, PhD Associate Dean for Research Education

Oversees the department’s resident trainee Research Training Program, which integrates professional development and mentored research training alongside clinical training. Dr. Bumgardner directs the degree-granting COM Master of Medical Science program and is the program director/principal investigator of the NIH-funded training grant T32AI106704 titled Advanced Research Training in Immunology for Surgical Trainees (ARTIST).



Sherif Abdel-Misih, MD Surgery Unit Director

Lead.Serve.Inspire. (LSI) Part 2 Understanding Patients with Reproductive and Surgical Needs (UPRSN)
Associate Program Director, General Surgery Residency

Oversees and coordinates various levels of surgical training involving fellowship training, the OSUWMC general surgery residency program and the OSU COM undergraduate surgical medical education, including the unique multi-institutional translational summer oncology program (CUPID/Cancer in underrepresented, indigent and disadvantaged). Dr. Abdel-Misih actively pursues research opportunities related to surgical education to advance the field and future approaches to teaching.



Angie Arnett, BBA Program Coordinator Med III/IV

Coordinates the day-to-day tasks and requirements for the third- and fourth-year med students in our Understanding Patients with Reproductive and Surgical Needs (UPRSN) ring.



Brittany Campbell, MBA General Surgery Residency Program Manager

Coordinates and manages the day-to-day tasks and requirements of general surgery residents.



Xiaodong (Phoenix) Chen, PhD, MS Research Assistant Professor in Surgical Education and Research

Helps design, implement and oversee education programs within the Department of Surgery and will assist in developing an Office of Surgery Education.



Alan Harzman, MD Associate Professor of Surgery, General Surgery Program Director

Oversees the general surgery residency program and its role within the department and medical center. Formerly served as Clerkship Director and participates in educational research.

Michael Meara, MD Assistant Director of Surgical Simulation, Assistant Director of Integration

Tasked with organization and advocacy for the department in relation to the CESAC, which has led to him organizing and designing the surgical skills sessions in their relation to our current two-year education model. He also serve as the assistant director of Integration for our third-year medical students in the Understanding Patients with Reproductive and Surgical Needs (UPRSN) ring of LSI Part 2. 



Anna Patterson Program Manager, Research Education

Facilitates the development and implementation of strategic program initiatives as they relate to the Department of Surgery’s Research Training Program.
