Mens Sexual HealthMale patients seeking help for sexual dysfunction will have a new care option later this year.

The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is developing a telemedicine research program that will allow men from underserved areas to discuss their issues with a specialist – via smartphone or other video technology.

“We are trying to reach men in underserved and rural areas that are seeing a decline in the number of urology specialists,” says Lawrence Jenkins, MD, primary investigator. “Often, new urology providers choose to practice in big cities. With telemedicine, we can offer care for patients who have limited travel resources.”

Researchers are considering two potential consultation methods for patients:

  • Video smartphone technology used from the comfort and privacy of home
  • A computer with camera and appropriate teleconferencing equipment stationed at a convenient, local health facility

During telemedicine consultations, patients also would be screened for cardiovascular disease and depression, other conditions often associated with erectile dysfunction.

The goal of the study is to determine whether teleconferences are a viable option to improve care – and access to care – for men with sexual health issues.

This research is made possible with a $190,000 Upper Payment Limit (UPL) grant through the program that reimburses institutions for taking care of Medicaid patients.
