Transplant care

We’ve been one of the nation’s busiest multi-organ transplant centers since 1967. Our new abdominal transplant care floor has 60 private universal progressive care rooms, designed to address the full continuum of care needed by kidney, liver and pancreas transplant patients. We have a 10-bed intensive care unit to accommodate pre- and post-transplant liver patients and post-transplant kidney patients. We’ve built two biopsy bays that help to detect early rejection of kidney transplants, with direct access to an 18-bay dialysis area, ensuring convenient, comprehensive care.

Critical care when it’s needed most

With 234 intensive care beds, the new University Hospital triples our capacity to provide lifesaving care to those experiencing a serious injury or critical illness. As Level 1 trauma center and as home to central Ohio’s only adult burn center, our new hospital expands our ability to care for patients from across our region. In the event of a major public health outbreak, floor ten of the new hospital can also be converted to support an increase in airborne infection isolation needs. Each intensive care unit was designed to focus on patient-centered comfort, with advanced technologies to match the level of critical care we provide.

Expanded neurology care

Our neurology experts treat conditions such as stroke, neurotrauma and traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and chronic pain. The Neurosciences Critical Care Unit provides around-the-clock care for patients with stroke, trauma or neurological surgery, and has diagnostic services such as computed tomography, electromyography and electroencephalograms. A rehabilitation gym on the unit facilitates patients’ recovery and prepares those patients for discharge and aftercare. On the same floor, an expanded Comprehensive Epilepsy Center includes innovative monitoring technology and close access to surgical care.

Unrivaled surgical options

The new University Hospital has 24 operating rooms, including neurosurgery suites, an expanded surgical intensive care unit and an innovative burn center, each designed for complex and specialized surgeries. We perform colon and rectal surgery, general and gastrointestinal surgery, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic surgery, bariatric surgery, transplantation and minimally invasive surgeries. A Level 1 trauma center, we care for those with traumas, burns and wounds. And the new hospital is home to next-generation robotic technology as one of the highest-volume robotic programs in the nation.
