The Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine welcomed a new cohort of ear, nose and throat (ENT) leaders this summer. This group of five specialty trained, board-certified otolaryngologists brings significant research and clinical experience to support strategic growth efforts at the department level — from growing capabilities in facial nerve reconstruction to igniting new research areas related to ENT access and public health.
“The Department of Otolaryngology is increasingly being recognized nationally as an academic program where surgeon-scientists can be both great clinicians and achieve academically,” says James Rocco, MD, PhD, chair of the department. “The new clinicians joining our team are ambitious people who want to be great physicians and leaders in health care.”
The new faculty members joining the department this summer include:
- Ashley Miller, MD, who is joining Nationwide Children’s Hospital as a pediatric otolaryngologist and maintains an academic appointment in the department. Dr. Miller recently completed her fellowship in laryngology at the Medical University of South Carolina, having previously wrapped a fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Miller went to Cincinnati after her residency at the Harvard Medical School/Mass Eye and Ear/Mass General Brigham Residency Program in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, and earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School.
- Lauren Miller, MD, MBA, who is officially joining the department as a head and neck surgeon after a successful fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Dr. Miller completed her residency at Harvard Medical School/Mass Eye and Ear/Mass General Brigham Residency Program in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. She earned both her medical degree and MBA from the University of Pennsylvania and The Wharton School.
- Kevin Quinn, MD, who is joining the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Quinn completed a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Harvard Medical School. He completed his residency in otolaryngology at Virginia Commonwealth University and earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
- Vinay Rathi, MD, MBA, who is joining the Division of Rhinology. Dr. Rathi has been a prolific researcher throughout his schooling, publishing nearly 100 papers. He completed a fellowship in rhinology and anterior skull-base surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina. Previously, he completed his residency at Harvard Medical School/Mass Eye and Ear/Mass General Brigham Residency Program in otolaryngology – head and neck surgery. Dr. Rathi earned his medical degree from the Yale School of Medicine and his MBA from Harvard Business School.
- Rishabh Sethia, MD, who is joining Nationwide Children’s Hospital as a pediatric otolaryngologist. Dr. Sethia completed his otolaryngology residency at Ohio State before finishing a fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology – head and neck surgery at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Dr. Sethia earned his medical degree from Ohio State.
“A department known for its patient care, we want people who will be great clinicians with great operative skills,” Dr. Rocco says. “Our program is known for having clinically skilled surgeons, but we are also interested in our faculty’s ability to contribute to our department and nationally to academics, research and education.”
For example, in addition to their clinical roles, Dr. Miller and Dr. Rathi will also participate in the university’s Center for the Advancement of Team Science, Analytics, and Systems Thinking in Health Services and Implementation Science Research (CATALYST). Through this center, these leaders will have access to statisticians, databases, policy experts and mentors who can help them create programs in areas of interest, including outcomes and policy research.
“We are committed to investing in people in many different ways,” Dr. Rocco says. “That includes opportunities like empowering Dr. Miller and Dr. Rathi to participate in CATALYST and creating new mentorship opportunities for aspiring leaders in the field.”
