Helping patients return to doing what they love most
Jess Donovan, DPT, PT, physical therapist
As a physical therapist and geriatric clinical specialist, Jess Donovan, DPT, finds inspiration in helping people learn new ways to thrive as they grow older.
“The highlight of my job is using my expertise while partnering with the patient’s knowledge about their own lived experiences to generate a patient-centered, individualized plan of care to help them do whatever it is that they love most,” Jess says.
“Supporting each patient through this journey can be tiring but, at the end of it all, so rewarding when they can find new possibilities and joys in their lives as they age."
It’s easy to see Jess’s enthusiasm as she goes about her day interacting with both new and long-term patients, building rapport and creating an environment in which they not only can heal, but also feel comfortable moving their bodies and testing themselves to gain the strength they need to flourish.
Jess also appreciates the variety of her work. Along with patient care, she mentors as co-director of the geriatric physical therapy residency program, is an associate professor in the Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy program and chairs the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Leadership Committee for the rehabilitation services team.
Jess believes that to be the best patient advocate, you must surround yourself with the best teams.
“I’m fortunate to work in so many teams full of great people,” she says. “The clinical team at Outpatient Care New Albany rehab is unparalleled in their compassion and care. The diversity, equity and inclusion world in rehab services is active and dedicated to the work we’re doing. The students and faculty in the doctorate of physical therapy and geriatric residency programs are among the best humans I know. I’m continually inspired by them to do and be better in each of my roles.”
