Committed to improving quality of life for patients and their families
The palliative medicine team focuses on improving the quality of life of patients and their families facing life-threatening illnesses. Our goal at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s Division of Palliative Medicine is the prevention and relief of suffering through treatment of pain and other physical, psychosocial and spiritual issues.
How can palliative medicine help you?
- Treatment of pain and other symptoms by an expert subspecialist
- Guidance with difficult and complex treatment choices
- Navigation of the health care system through the entire course of the serious illness
- Emotional and spiritual support for you and your family
How is palliative medicine different from hospice care?
Palliative medicine can be provided during any stage of a serious illness, alongside active treatments that are intended to prolong life such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy and/or radiation.
Hospice care is an extension of palliative medicine for patients with a short life expectancy (less than a six-month prognosis) that provides additional supportive services. Our team can provide more information about and assist with a transition to hospice care if needed. In addition, when patients are unable to leave the hospital our team can provide you with end-of-life care. The goal is to help patients live the remainder of their lives with quality and dignity.
How can our team support you?
The Palliative Medicine team includes physicians, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, psychologists and social workers. These team members collaborate with your primary treatment teams both in the hospital and in clinic—including your team’s social workers, chaplains, primary care services, nurse practitioners and patient care resource managers (PCRMs)—to ensure you’re receiving the most compassionate care every step of the way.
