Online price list gives you clarity for your health care

pricing_bloglargeThe more we can reduce your stress, the more you can focus on what is most important – the care of you or your family at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. That is why we are excited about one of our latest initiatives to publish all of our hospital charges for services we offer either as an outpatient or inpatient.

Online hospital charge lists can give you clarity for your healthcare costs, but, like our medical care, we want to personalize it to you.

Our customer service team is just a phone call away (614-293-2100) from giving you a customized estimate for any upcoming procedure or stay at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

“We want to help you avoid any surprises by understanding your insurance plan and your potential out of pocket expenses,” says Debra Lowe, administrator of revenue cycle at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

What is included on Ohio State’s patient price lists?

Patients can now view our hospital chargemaster. The hospital chargemaster is where you will find charges for our various room and board categories, emergency department service levels, all diagnostic tests and procedures and our operating room services. We have also posted a separate list of supplies and pharmaceuticals with their respective charges.

Another helpful list is our average charges for specific inpatient stays at our hospitals. In the industry, the services you receive as an inpatient are categorized into a diagnostic related group (DRG). Some examples include heart transplant and obstetrics.

The most important thing for patients to note is that the amount for each line item is the charge billed by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to your insurance company. This is not the amount you will pay.

“Factors like your insurance company coverage, deductibles and co-insurance can drastically impact your out-of-pocket expenses. If you call our customer service team, we can give you a more accurate estimate,” Lowe says. “Please let us know if the procedure is already scheduled or if you are just planning a procedure. It is very helpful to provide us with as much detail as possible.”

Even uninsured Ohio residents will not pay the charge listed. We are committed to providing care to all patients. Patients without insurance can learn more about financial assistance options and discounts that can be applied to their bill.

What is not included on Ohio State’s patient price lists?

The hospital chargemaster does not include charges for services provided by the providers who treat you while receiving care at the hospital. Our customer service team (614-293-2100) can help provide that information in your estimate.

Here are some common examples of providers who may bill you separately:

  • Surgeon who performs a procedure.
  • Anesthesiologist who assists during your surgery.
  • Radiologists who interpret your X-ray/MRI.
  • Pathologists who review your specimens.

How do you download Ohio State patient price lists?

Our site contains four files for your review.

Those files include our hospital chargemaster, supply chargemaster, pharmacy chargemaster and diagnostic related grouping. Line items and charges are the amounts billed to all insurance companies, including Medicare and Medicaid. Insurers apply their contracted rates to the services that are billed.

The chargemaster is not a helpful tool for a patient to comparison shop between hospitals or to estimate what healthcare services are going to cost you out of pocket. For more information about the cost of your care, please contact our customer service team at 614-293-2100 to receive an individualized estimate.
