Personalized Patient Estimates

The more we can reduce your stress, the more you can focus on what is most important — the care of you or your family at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. That is why we are excited about creating personalized patient estimates for you or your family.

We have created two online estimate tools located on this page — MyChart Estimates and Guest Estimates — that can assist you in understanding your cost for care. If needed, you're always welcome to call us for a customized estimate at 614-293-2100.

“We want to help you avoid any surprises by helping you understand your medical insurance plan and your potential out-of-pocket expenses,” says Debra Lowe, administrator of revenue cycle at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

What's included on Ohio State’s hospital standard charge files?

Your hospital bill will reflect all of the hospital services you received during your stay or outpatient service with us. Hospital standard charges (also known as gross charges) do not include professional provider fees, and you may receive additional bills from those who helped with your care such as a pathologist, anesthesiologist, admitting physician, emergency physician or your surgeon.

We have published our hospital standard charges, along with the minimum and maximum reimbursement, received from the insurance payer. Examples of hospital standard charges include room and board categories, emergency department service levels, all diagnostic tests and procedures and our operating room services.

In the industry, the services you receive as an inpatient are categorized and grouped into a diagnostic related group (DRG). Some examples include heart transplant and obstetrics. Those line item services provided during the stay along with their associated gross charges are billed to all insurance payers, including Medicare and Medicaid. Insurers then apply their contracted rates to the services billed and provide reimbursement to the hospital.

The most important thing for patients to note is that the amount for each line item is the gross charge billed by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to your insurance company. This is not the amount you'll pay.

“Factors like your insurance company coverage, deductibles and co-insurance can drastically impact your out-of-pocket expenses. If you call our customer service team, we can give you a more accurate estimate,” Lowe says. “Please let us know if the procedure is already scheduled or if you are just planning a procedure. It is very helpful to provide us with as much detail as possible.”

Even uninsured Ohio residents won't pay the charge listed. We're committed to providing care to all patients. Patients without insurance can learn more about financial assistance options that can be applied to their bill.

Our customer service team is just a phone call away (614-293-2100) from giving you a customized estimate for any upcoming procedure or stay at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.

Which Ohio State hospitals are included in the downloadable hospital standard charge files?

All Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center hospitals are included in the downloadable hospital standard charge files. Those entities include Richard M. Ross Heart Hospital, University Hospital, East Hospital, The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, Brain and Spine Hospital as well as all our outpatient locations.

These files won't provide you an accurate or customized estimate for health services.

What isn't included in the hospital standard charge files?

The hospital standard charge files don't include charges for services provided by the providers who treat you while you receive care at the hospital. Our customer service team (614-293-2100) can help provide that information in your estimate.

Here are some common examples of providers who may bill you separately:

  • Surgeon who performs a procedure.
  • Anesthesiologist who assists during your surgery.
  • Radiologists who interpret your X-ray/MRI.
  • Pathologists who review your specimens.
