Tara Thapaliya in the lab

“My interest in medical laboratory science emerged as a result of my research experience during my undergraduate studies. I graduated from college with a BS in Medical Technology. I worked at Transfusion Services for about four years and transfered to the Flow Cytometry Laboratory to extend my laboratory scope. Currently, I am utilizing the tuition assistance program to get a master’s degree in Public Administration and Leadership (MPAL) through The Ohio State University. My plan is to stay within the organization and get promoted to a leadership position when I am ready with my education and experience.”

Valarie Burns

“I love science and enjoy hands-on work, so the Medical Laboratory field seemed like the perfect fit. I have been in the field since 2006, with most of my career spent being a generalist. I worked in a medical laboratory for animals and spent a short time in research. Ohio State is a large organization and has opportunities to work in specialized laboratories that other hospitals do not offer. We have a great team, and leadership in our department is very supportive. You get experience and skills that you will not get anywhere else.”

Yu-Ching Yeh at work

“The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center has a very complex transfusion service and serves a very diverse patient population. A blood bank technologist can get a lot of experience and knowledge about transfusion medicine while working here. While studying in the Ohio State medical technology program, I was also a student working in the Ohio State Blood Bank. Working there gave me a chance to see how a blood bank technologist prepares blood products for patient transfusions, and how to problem solve multiple antibodies. This experience made me more interested the skills that led me to becoming a blood bank technologist.”
