About Me
As a member of the Leukemia Research Program at the OSUCCC – James, I am focused on developing strategies to enhance cancer treatments with the goal of improving patient outcomes. My training in biofluid dynamics and interfacial science forms the foundation of my research in two cancer-relevant areas: cellular bioenergetics and targeted drug delivery.
My work in cellular bioenergetics centers on the interplay between mitochondrial dynamics, respiratory function, and induced cellular stressors which can alter cellular metabolic requirements and evoke cellular injury or death. I am also focused on the mechanisms of molecular recognition with the goal of improving cancer drug delivery. Specifically, I am investigating how drug cargo-laden nanocarriers can be better targeted toward specific cell types. This work also includes a focus on cellular uptake mechanisms and intracellular trafficking of nanocarriers as well as cargo (drug) dispersion from the nanocarriers.?
I have been contributing to my research field for more than three decades. I have authored hundreds of peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and book chapters, and I have been invited to present my research at dozens of lectures around the United States and internationally.?
In addition to my research work, I serve as the founding director of the Center for Medical and Engineering Innovation at The Ohio State University. The program is focused on increasing collaboration between healthcare professionals and engineers to improve patient care. I am also the vice chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Anesthesiology as well as a tenured professor.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 09/30/2024, Dr. Eckmann has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
