About Me
As a gastroenterologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, I specialize in providing comprehensive GI care. I regularly treat patients for conditions such as acid reflux, peptic ulcers and chronic constipation, and perform endoscopies, colonoscopies and diagnostic testing. I also collaborate with colleagues to help patients manage liver disease and colorectal cancer.
I have particular clinical interests in irritable bowel syndrome and other disorders of nerve-gut interaction, as well as GI disorders related to pelvic floor dysfunction such as dyssynergic defecation. My research is focused on endoscopic outcomes and the intersection between GI disorders and chronic pain. I was honored to present my work before the international joint conference of the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society (ANMS) and European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility on the overlap of GI disorders with interstitial cystitis, a chronic bladder pain disorder.
I became a physician because I am passionate about providing high-quality care to improve patients’ lives. I enjoy specializing in gastroenterology because of the opportunity to support my patients across a breadth of services from the clinic to the endoscopy lab and the hospital. It’s extremely rewarding to see patients improve after starting the right treatment. My patients can rely on me to provide compassionate care, communicate clearly and honestly, and trust that I will work with them to deliver a customized treatment plan to address their specific needs. It’s a privilege to do this work at a world-class institution like The Ohio State University, and to work alongside such skilled and prestigious colleagues.
Before I became a doctor, I wanted to be a teacher. I am passionate about education and very pleased to have the opportunity to help guide medical students, residents and fellows. I run small group sessions, give formal lectures and provide on-the-job education for medical students on my clinical teams.
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling and skiing. I also like reading and writing fantasy/sci-fi stories, and computer programming.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 09/30/2024, Dr. Westrich has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
I appreciate all that he did to take care of me and seeing me on his lunch hour
Dr. Westrich has been wonderful! After seeing two other GI doctors previously, it's great to finally find someone who listens and makes me feel heard! He is very thorough and makes sure I get everything I need to improve my health. Highly recommend!
He is always enters the room with a pleasant smile and is interested in my health. He also asks pertinent questions. Looks the patient in the eye and answers questions that I had.
