About Me
I am a neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of spine disorders, injuries, and illnesses. I obtained my medical degree at Northwestern University and finished neurosurgery residency at the Barrow Neurological Institute, where I also completed a fellowship in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery.
My areas of focus and expertise include:
• Complex spine surgery, with particular focus on revision spine surgery
• Minimally invasive surgery, including spinal endoscopy and robotic surgery
• Spine deformities and scoliosis
• Spine tumors and oncologic surgery
Overall, my philosophy is to use the most minimally invasive treatment strategies to address my patient’s conditions, including maximizing all non-surgical measures first. For complex or challenging problems that cannot be addressed adequately with a minimally invasive option, I can also offer the entire spectrum of traditional surgical techniques.
I treat my patients as partners, and strive to communicate clearly, patiently, and above all else, honestly about all matters relevant to their health and care. I will always take a stand for my patients’ best interests, especially if it doesn’t include surgery!

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. The provider was wonderful. He was so caring and you could tell that he really felt bad telling me that he could not help me. That my back was in such terrible shape and that I had my age against me to have the surgery to help me.
Dr. Xu is patient, kind and well informed. He is helping me find a path forward post surgery that did not go as expected with a different Dr.who Is not In the OSU system.I wish I had seen him earlier!!!

I've only had good experiences with Dr. Vu. Keep in mind my surgery was delicate and necessary,and Dr. Xu explained the risks and procedure in a manner that instilled confidence in his ability to me. This visit was my 15 month post op. Dr. Xu, again gave me answers forthrightly. I am confident my surgery was successful because of the quality of life I have now and Dr. Xu's prognosis. Don't let Dr. Xu get away from Ohio! Best cutter ever!

I came to OSU for a second opinion on my L5 S1 spine issues, I am a plus size person, I am very aware of my size and am trying to actively make changes however my back issues have very much slowed down my progress. This Doctor (David X) preached to me about how there's nothing he can do for me, even if I lost 200lbs due to genetics and my size. He did not have a copy of my MRI which I called in previously to ask if they had access to it, stating that it wouldn't matter because there's nothing he can do for me regardless. Saying even if I had a tumor on my spine, he wouldn't operate because no needle could access my back, their instruments do not reach "that far in" and stated that even if I had a tumor, he wouldn't operate, implying I would die, later stating that I have to lay on my stomach for the surgery and they could not pump enough air into my lungs to keep me alive. I have never walked away from a Doctors appointment speechless but last week was a first. I only was seeking a second opinion, which now I have to pay for Xrays/appointments for a doctor that degraded me as a human being.

It was my first time with the Dr., and I didn't really know what was going on. Dr. Xu showed me my X-ray, and we talked about what he was wanting/needing to do. I really wasn't sure what the order of things to come. I am still kinda confused about the order of things.
