About Me

As an advanced oncology certified nurse practitioner in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the OSUCCC – James, I specialize in addressing breast health concerns. I primarily treat patients who have an increased risk of developing breast cancer due to genetic mutations, family background or personal medical history.

My role involves assessing and diagnosing breast concerns, which can include benign, infectious or malignant findings. I identify those who are at elevated risk?for the development of breast cancer?and offer strategies for enhanced surveillance and tools to aid in lowering their?personal risk.?Prior to my current role, I spent several years with the breast medical oncology unit here at The James providing inclusive and individualized care to those experiencing the physical, emotional and spiritual effects of a breast cancer diagnosis.

When guiding those with a new breast cancer diagnosis or assisting those at?high risk for the development of breast cancer, I strive to?understand the uniqueness of the individual and offer resources accordingly. I prioritize education and always ensure my patients understand their breast cancer risk, key prevention strategies and opportunities for early detection. I am passionate about patient care because each person?I serve is a member of something larger, such as their family or chosen community, and it’s rewarding to be able to support them and their loved ones throughout their journey toward optimal breast health.

It is a privilege to be part of such an exceptional and inclusive team at the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center, where the access to resources and innovative research allows me to offer the most up-to-date services possible. I value the multidisciplinary approach and the focus on treating the whole patient.

In addition to my clinical responsibilities, my role includes helping to train future providers. I have frequently?served as a preceptor to nurse practitioners and nurse practitioner fellows.?I am also a member of the Oncologic Nursing Society.

My experience with Dawn Denton was exactly what I was hoping to get from my initial appointment at The James. I felt listened to and involved in the conversation but also guided as a plan was formed for my health care with my input.

Dawn is a wonderful provider. I reached out with new concerns right before the holidays and she got me in that week. She listened to my concerns, provided empathy, and direct information about what she noticed. She is a great model for effective communication, and providing empathy and validation of patient concerns. Despite the nature of the concerns being anxiety provoking, Dawn has consistently put me at ease and I feel very well cared for.

I saw a NP (Dawn Denton) for second opinion and follow up! She is wonderful really helped put my mind at ease. Spent a lot of time going over my mammograms and carefully explaining them and what they showed, something I didn't get before coming to the Spielman Center!
