About Me

I chose to pursue pathology in order to solve diagnostic challenges and help provide patients with answers. As an oral and maxillofacial specialist, I examine and diagnose conditions impacting the mouth and facial areas, including soft tissue cancers and bone diseases.

I am active in research efforts to advance the care we can offer our patients, with an emphasis on oral squamous cell carcinoma and bone pathology. I served as co-author for the first-position paper of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology (AAOMP) focused on medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.

I enjoy working in academic medicine because it keeps me updated on the most innovative scientific, medical and pathology advancements, which improve my effectiveness as a practicing pathologist. My role also includes educating the next generation of providers as a clinical professor in the College of Dentistry, and I am a longtime member of The Ohio State University Hospitals Bylaws Committee.

I have served on scientific panels for the American Dental Association and have previously served as president of the AAOMP and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.

Consulting and Related Relationships

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.

As of 09/30/2024, Dr. Kalmar has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
