About Me
As a board-certified hospice and palliative medicine physician, I provide compassionate care to patients with cancer. At the OSUCCC – James, we believe in a holistic approach to support our patients and bring them relief from their symptoms. I feel called to this work and it’s a privilege to be part of such a committed team.
My role includes helping to train future physicians in palliative medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. I’m an assistant professor at the Center for Bioethics and a physician educator in the Division of Palliative Medicine. I also serve as the associate director of the Clinical Ethics Fellowship Program and as associate director of the Advanced Management in Relationship Centered Care MS4 core clerkship.
I co-authored a chapter in the fifth edition of Principles and Practice of Palliative Care and Supportive Oncology on the ethics of palliative care. I’ve also presented about compassionate care for patients at medical conferences around the country.
I truly enjoy the supportive, collegial and patient-centered environment of The James. Our palliative medicine clinic includes dedicated nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, social workers and psychologists who work together in providing the best care for our patients.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 09/30/2024, Dr. Shirilla has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
