About Me

I am a cardiologist known internationally for my research and care in advanced heart failure, cardiac transplantation, mechanical circulatory support and, in particular, pulmonary vascular disease.

I’m deeply passionate about treating these conditions and discovering new and advanced ways to prolong life and improve how my patients feel on a daily basis. Those feelings often go deeper than what is on a medical chart — the frustration and worry that accompany serious heart disease deserve special attention and consideration, and understanding these feelings helps me connect with my patients in a meaningful way that extends beyond the typical patient-doctor relationship.

My work straddles the clinical and research worlds, which means I’m able to offer my patients the most advanced therapies and treatments before they’re widely available to the general public. I’ve served as an investigator in over 80 clinical trials, and among the highlights of my career is my work to ensure a fairer distribution of donor lungs for patients with end-stage pulmonary diseases. The risk calculator I developed for these patients is now used in clinical trials and hospitals around the world.

I joined The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in 2020 to deepen my translational research and share my experience and expertise with patients, fellow clinicians and medical students. I serve as the director of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine as well as the Bob and Corrine Frick Endowed Chair in Heart Failure.

Among my accomplishments, I’ve been named Physician of the Year by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association and was elected by my peers as a member of the elite Association of University Cardiologists. I also served on President Barack Obama’s Advisory Committee on Organ Transplantation for four years, and I was knighted by Italy’s House of Savoy for my philanthropic work in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Outside of work, I’m an avid photographer who enjoys capturing the feeling in architectural elements and sculptures.

Consulting and Related Relationships

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.

As of 11/01/2020, Dr. Benza has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
