About Me
I am a board-certified family medicine physician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. I am one of less than 100 board-certified primary care diabetologists in the United States. I specialize in providing comprehensive primary care, with a focus on diabetes management, chronic disease management, preventive care and health services for transgender persons.
I have been practicing for more than 30 years over a unique and diverse career. I have been a faculty member at four different medical schools. I have conducted medical research in rural Ecuador, led a medical mission in Kenya and have taught physicians in China about providing primary care. I have even been a cruise ship physician. I have been invited to speak at multiple medical conferences primarily on diabetes care, published articles on a variety of topics and have edited a textbook on diabetes. My patients have included White House Secret Service agents, incarcerated persons, professional athletes and people living in impoverished U.S. areas.
At the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, in addition to my clinical responsibilities, I am committed to advancing medical education and mentoring future physicians. I serve as an associate professor of Family and Community Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and I am a faculty member in The Ohio State Family Medicine Residency Program.
My patients rely on me for high-quality, comprehensive, compassionate care and honest communication. I create a respectful and inclusive environment, ensuring that each patient feels heard, understood and supported.
In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, woodcarving, mushroom hunting, kayaking and relaxing with my wife, Christy.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.

N/A, he was great
Dr. Gotfried is fantastic!
Dr. Gotfried listen carefully to what I have to say. I feel confident in his medical expertise. He was there for me last year when I was really sick.
Dr. Gotfried is the best doctor I have ever had and I'm 68 years old.
Dr. Gotfried is excellent. He takes the time to listen and discuss what is going on with me. I feel like he cares and really wants to address the issues I'm having. He's the first doctor I've trusted in a long time. His nurse this last visit was really great too .
Always listens. I email him regularly and he responds.

Did a great job.
Dr. Gotfried is the best doctor I've ever had.
Asked questions and checked my file to understand my health situation
I really like my provider. He speaks very intentionally, it is clear he chooses his words carefully and respectfully. He always validates any distress I have about my health, and respects my transness. He does not sugarcoat his responses, but is not harsh about it. He has a bit of a playful streak with sometimes throwing in small bits of dry humor to his approach. That makes me feel as if he's not just treating me as patient or a work task to complete, but a person.
He showed concern and empathy regarding a new diagnosis from another care provider.
HE is very attentive to our concerns and a good listener
