About Me
As an otolaryngologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, I specialize in sinus surgery, sleep apnea, thyroid surgery and pediatrics. I have a special interest in sinus issues and implants for seizure disorders, as well as treating children for tonsil issues and ear tubes.
I believe using a holistic approach to patient care, and not just simply treating a patient’s symptoms. I think it’s important to listen to each patient’s concerns and work with him or her to resolve any issues.
I love my job and enjoy working with my patients to help improve their quality of life. The Ohio State University’s Department of Otolaryngology is ranked as one of the best in the nation, and our physicians work together to give patients the best care and medical therapy. I am very happy to have found my purpose as an ENT physician.
In my free time I enjoy running, playing tennis and spending as much time as possible with my wife and four children.

He was caring, paid attention to details.
I have never responded with negative comments before but this was such a disappointing experience, I feel obligated to comment. I chose this dr because his bio stated he treated a condition I suspected I had (LPR). In his comments he indicated he was concerned with patient's overall well- being and had interest in helping patients get treatment needed if he wasn't able to address their needs. I don't knows if he had looked at my history but he addressed only the complaint I had about my throat - he advised that I had a " habit" of throat clearing and coughing and was irritating my throat - his suggestion was that I stop doing it. I questioned if there was an underlying condition - As he was exiting the room , he agreed that LPR could be contributing and that I should follow up with whoever is managing my LPR - which is nobody - that is why I came there. He said that if my symptoms don't improve with my efforts to break my "habit" , he can refer me to another ent at the main clinic who can do exam with camera so I can see pics on screen ???? Overall, this visit was disappointing and frustrating. On a positive note, the dr seemed skilled at examining my throat - the procedure was painless.
Excellent

Attentive, caring, thorough, knowledgeable, and informative.
I went in with several issues: dizziness (which I felt was comming from sinuses) and I explained I had two throat surgeries at the back of my throat around my esophages for an area that had thinned and pouched out and where food was collecting. I told Dr. Pena that this area was collecting sinus drainage and I was awakening in the middle of the night coughing out this drainage. He heard the part about the drainage and not the part about the idea that the surgical area was pouching out again. The conversation went on about the drainage and what could be done and he recommended Flonase and Mucinex D. I was in and out quickly, he was on his way to lunch and I was the last patient in there. I realized when I got to the car the issue of the pouching throat area was not addressed, I was concentrating on what he was saying and was distracted from the actual issue. I see this is partly my fault for not describing the problem or my concernbetter, but I feel he may have been subconsciously concentrating on the easily solvable and missed the problem for which I was there.

Dr. Pema was also excellent (he was a student of my original ENT physician at OSU). Reassured me that pain in my ear was from wax, removed wax & explained about a kind of hearing aid that might enable at least the sensation of bilateral hearing. He gave me instructions on follow-up info; & a trial run, if I decide to try the device.
Overall great exp.

Very kind, I liked him. He had a plan for my care. I didn't see that he knew my history. He did not ask many questions. He did not explain the different possible reasons for my dizziness. He did not explain my follow-up, when I would see him again.

Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wonderful! Really paid attention to my problem and came up with a solution.
Great physician his audiologist was also very good
Very quick and reassuring during ear exam and ear wax extraction.
He was so attentive, eye contact, shared "chit chat" type conversation thus creating calm feeling/atmosphere.
This provider did not address my most serious concerns; he did not even respond to them. The very reason I scheduled the appointment. Terrible experience. Total waste of time. I have VERY SERIOUS ENT issues I've been struggling with for over 4 years and was treated like a child with allergies. Medications he wanted me to take in past and told him they don't work. He had them sent (mailed) to me anyway. Completely wasted my and my wife's time.
He was honest. I need that.
He's great at removing my skin tag on roof of my mouth gagging me. Ate lunch & supper.
Great care. Explanations and directions were clear. They cured my vertigo which I'd had for 15 months. I should have sought help earlier.
Very good
Dr. Pema took the time to listen to me, but didn't suggest great options regarding my treatment when I know there are other options. I felt like I was getting turfed.
Everything was good.
Dr. Pema was wonderful, very reassuring & friendly. He was great about explaining things to me & helpful in letting me know I would have follow up. Great experience - I was happy to find him & his staff. Super people!!!
He listenned well. Acted quickly but carefully.
Professional and took time to listen to my concerns
Very friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful
Very good.
I had a nose bleed in the middle night that went on & off for 4 days. I contacted OSU and the referred me to Dr. Pema. They wanted me in the next day and with some medication and a couple of home humidifiers it seems to have passed. It's been over 2 weeks. I believe it started by laying face down on CPAP mask and dry air at home. Was grateful to Dr. Pema - a specialist - to see me on such short notice.
