About Me
As an otolaryngologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, I specialize in sinus surgery, sleep apnea, thyroid surgery and pediatrics. I have a special interest in sinus issues and implants for seizure disorders, as well as treating children for tonsil issues and ear tubes.
I believe using a holistic approach to patient care, and not just simply treating a patient’s symptoms. I think it’s important to listen to each patient’s concerns and work with him or her to resolve any issues.
I love my job and enjoy working with my patients to help improve their quality of life. The Ohio State University’s Department of Otolaryngology is ranked as one of the best in the nation, and our physicians work together to give patients the best care and medical therapy. I am very happy to have found my purpose as an ENT physician.
In my free time I enjoy running, playing tennis and spending as much time as possible with my wife and four children.

Excellent
He is one of the best doctors I have ever interacted with. He was completely sympathetic to my concerns, considering that my mother had just passed away. I felt very comfortable sharing with him that I am a "recovering "hypochondriac. I do actually suffer from generalized anxiety disorder, and since my mothers passing by hypochondria has been triggered, and he was extremely sympathetic to my issue. I did actually have a legitimate issue that needed to be dressed, and he did not downplay my concerns. I would definitely return to him and have him as my ENT.
My care provider has a great bedside manner, engaging, and explains things well.

Amazing good
I was referred to him by my vasculitis doctor, but he didn't seem to be interested in sharing his opinion on that issue with me. He was more interested in testing my hearing, which was not the reason I was referred to see him, and telling me that hearing problems could negatively affect my functioning. I believe that is true in general, but whatever the test showed, I can hear very well, even in noisy environments, and never have to ask anyone to repeat themselves.
Dr. Puma was very Professional, kind and explained everything perfectly.
Dr. Pema always courteous and professional, personable.
De. Pema is always an excellent communicator and explains everything
Very good
The provider said I had a dry mouth and that I should drink eight glasses of water a day and no more than two cups of coffee. He didn't do anything to determine what was causing my dry mouth. I did what he said and I'm now waking up at night with a sticky slimy mouth and pressure in my head. I feel worse than I did when I came to see him. Last night I had the worse night I have had since this started. It used to be when this happed, I would drink a glass of water and take a cough drop and I was able to go back to sleep. Last night when I woke up, my mouth was full of sticky slimy stuff and there was a lot of pressure in my head especially around my eyes. I had two glasses of water and three cough drops and it didn't help. I took some Sinus Calm Tablets and used a saline nasal spray and that didn't help. The pressure in my head was very uncomfortable. My wife got up and made me a haven't cup of tea and that relieved some of the pressure and I was able to sleep. When I woke up, I still had pressure. After I ate breakfast and had a couple of cups of coffee I felt better. I had a good night sleep since just before I visited the doctor.

The care provider was very thorough, pleasant, and reassuring.
The physician did not appear to know what the visit was for. He had to look up the records during the session. I felt as though he dismissed my concerns, indicated by "my wife tells me she is losing her hair all the time, I told her it's just part of getting old." The session felt rushed, and as though it was a bother for him to be there.

Always polite and professional
He was caring, paid attention to details.
I have never responded with negative comments before but this was such a disappointing experience, I feel obligated to comment. I chose this dr because his bio stated he treated a condition I suspected I had (LPR). In his comments he indicated he was concerned with patient's overall well- being and had interest in helping patients get treatment needed if he wasn't able to address their needs. I don't knows if he had looked at my history but he addressed only the complaint I had about my throat - he advised that I had a " habit" of throat clearing and coughing and was irritating my throat - his suggestion was that I stop doing it. I questioned if there was an underlying condition - As he was exiting the room , he agreed that LPR could be contributing and that I should follow up with whoever is managing my LPR - which is nobody - that is why I came there. He said that if my symptoms don't improve with my efforts to break my "habit" , he can refer me to another ent at the main clinic who can do exam with camera so I can see pics on screen ???? Overall, this visit was disappointing and frustrating. On a positive note, the dr seemed skilled at examining my throat - the procedure was painless.

I went in with several issues: dizziness (which I felt was comming from sinuses) and I explained I had two throat surgeries at the back of my throat around my esophages for an area that had thinned and pouched out and where food was collecting. I told Dr. Pena that this area was collecting sinus drainage and I was awakening in the middle of the night coughing out this drainage. He heard the part about the drainage and not the part about the idea that the surgical area was pouching out again. The conversation went on about the drainage and what could be done and he recommended Flonase and Mucinex D. I was in and out quickly, he was on his way to lunch and I was the last patient in there. I realized when I got to the car the issue of the pouching throat area was not addressed, I was concentrating on what he was saying and was distracted from the actual issue. I see this is partly my fault for not describing the problem or my concernbetter, but I feel he may have been subconsciously concentrating on the easily solvable and missed the problem for which I was there.
