About Me
As an infectious disease specialist, I primarily care for patients undergoing solid organ transplantation. I prevent and treat infections before, during and after surgery. The process can be scary for patients and I’m passionate about helping each person navigate through it. The transplant team at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center includes experts from every area of medicine and I’m proud to be part of it.
I consider each patient’s unique health circumstances when helping them make decisions regarding their medical care. I commonly handle opportunistic infections, antibiotic prophylaxis, infections in cancer patients and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
My research is focused on how diseases progress differently in immunocompromised patients and developing strategies to improve treatments. I’m also interested in infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria and how these infections can be prevented in organ transplant recipients.
My role includes training medical students, residents and fellows on how to diagnose and treat infections in organ transplant recipients. I’m the director of the immunocompromised host infectious diseases track, which is part of The Ohio State College of Medicine’s infectious diseases fellowship program.
When I’m not working, I enjoy reading science fiction novels and going on international trips.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 09/30/2024, Dr. Sarwar has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
