About Me
I am a cardiac surgeon focused on diagnosing, treating and operating on patients with congenital heart disease. I serve as surgical director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. I am also a pediatric heart surgeon and distinguished member of the Heart Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
I have extensive experience treating abnormalities, including hypoplastic left heart syndrome and anomalous coronary arteries. I perform neonatal heart surgery and procedures such as complex pulmonary artery reconstruction.
I am passionate about providing exceptional and compassionate care for people from birth to late adulthood. My patients and their families can rely on me for a customized approach tailored to their unique needs.
In addition to my clinical responsibilities, I am active in research efforts aimed at improving outcomes for patients with congenital heart disease. My current translational work at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital centers on single ventricle disease and the consequences of long-standing venous hypertension. I am also collaborating with other researchers on the development of tissue-engineered vascular grafts.
As an educator, my role includes teaching the next generation of physicians and surgeons through talks including use of simulation. I am an associate clinical professor of Surgery in The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 09/30/2024, Dr. Carrillo Melendez has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
