I specialize in emergency medicine. With more than 30 years of clinical, educational and research experience in emergency medical care, I have worked in venues ranging from remote rural, to suburban community, and large urban academic hospital facilities. When treating patients, I want to respond timely and thoughtfully. I’m most satisfied during my workday when I work effectively — getting the most out of each day.
What inspired me to study emergency medicine was that I wanted to improve emergency care for all patients. As chair of Emergency Medicine, I'm responsible for providing leadership for the department. I also want to continue to provide top-notch care for our patients, along with quality programs to educate and train our doctors.
The accomplishments I have had throughout my career continue to benefit countless patients.
I founded the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a full academic department at the School of Medicine. I also established the Center for Emerging Infections and Disaster Preparedness (CEIEP) in order to address issues associated with emerging infections and disaster preparedness through multidisciplinary research, training and service programs.
I transitioned to Penn State University (PSU), my alma mater (COM class 1981), in October, 2006. At PSU, I directed approximately 220 full time employees in their pursuit of high quality emergency medical care and education. At Penn State, I was instrumental in developing interdisciplinary groups to focus on systemic hypothermia, sepsis improvements, and emergency care clinical trials.
In my spare time, I enjoy relaxing with my family, traveling, reading, attending Ohio State football games, the outdoors, movies and walking.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
