About Me

As a neurosurgeon, I have the extensive training and expertise needed to make a difference for patients with a wide variety of conditions. I am one of the few neurosurgeons in the field with subspecialty qualifications to perform functional neurosurgery, treat brain tumors and epilepsy.

My research includes efforts to develop novel medical devices to improve care for those with neurological conditions such as paralysis and neuropsychiatric conditions. I also run FDA-approved clinical trials and research programs funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense.

I have authored more than 150 articles published in peer-reviewed journals including Nature, Cell, PNAS, Science Translational Medicine and others, and I am regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences. I also serve as a charter member of the National Institutes of Health Study Section that reviews hundreds of millions of dollars of grant proposals every year.

In addition, I am passionate about using my doctoral training in an engineering field to develop medical devices and therapeutics with the goal of meeting all patients'’ needs and improving long -term outcomes. This inspired me to create a biotechnology research nonprofit organization, launched in partnership with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Battelle, called the NeuroTech Institute, LLC. The Columbus-based institute is focused on developing novel solutions for neurological disease.

Outside of work, I enjoy competing in Ironman triathlons, reading, cooking, playing the guitar, and traveling.

Consulting and Related Relationships

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.

As of 09/29/2023, Dr. Lucas has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
