We’ve developed a great list of events and activities at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center Healthy Community Center (1600 E. Long St.). Please check back often to see what’s new or sign up for our newsletter to get center updates and a regular listing of upcoming events and activities. Everyone is welcome to participate and attend.
Please register before the event or first class in a series. In some cases, we can add you as a late entry if space allows, but it's best to secure your spot ahead of time. If you're unable to register online, please call or stop by the center in person to sign up.
Step into an immersive sound experience designed to relax your body, calm your mind and restore your energy. This one-time Sound Bath will guide you through soothing vibrations from singing bowls, chimes and other therapeutic instruments that encourage deep rest and inner balance. Whether you’re looking to release stress, reset your nervous system or simply enjoy something new, this session offers a powerful pause from the noise of everyday life.
Come curious – leave grounded, refreshed and recharged.
In partnership with OSU Extension, join us for hands-on, interactive gardening classes to learn how to create your own home gardens and grow healthy plants. This session is taught primarily by Eugene Law, PhD, from The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. There will be engaging conversation and take-home equipment to create your own green space.

Join us as we break ground in the Healthy Community Center garden to learn about transplanting crops, taking care of summer plants and how pollinators can help jump-start your own garden.
Pest Management
July 7, from 6-7 p.m. in the Healthy Community Center garden
Learn how to protect your garden from vermin and how to identify friends or foes in your beds. Weeding and pest management are very important to keep your garden happy and healthy.

This annual event hosted by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center at Outpatient Care East includes free health screenings, giveaways, health information, free food and fun for the whole family. Just show up! No need to register in advance. No insurance needed. Appointments for screenings close at 11 a.m.
The Healthy Community Center’s 2025 inaugural “Battle of the Bowls” event, sponsored by Genentech, delivered an unforgettable mix of flavor, teamwork and wellness education as community members gathered for a high energy “Top Chef”-style cooking challenge.
With its lively atmosphere and spirited competition, Battle of the Bowls was an instant fan favorite, so we’re bringing it back again this summer! This year’s challenge: Eat the Rainbow - Build a healthy bowl that features colorful fruits and vegetables (phytochemicals) to prevent chronic diseases.

The Longevity Paradox: Thriving vs. Surviving

Explore what it truly means to live well in the later stages of life – not just longer, but better. What’s Stealing Your Rest? Sleep Awareness

Join us for an interactive sleep awareness experience focused on uncovering what may be disrupting your rest. Explore a realistic “sleep scene” to identify common habits and environmental factors that interfere with sleep, then learn simple ways to improve your sleep environment.

With rising costs in today’s economy, it’s more important than ever to ensure you’re able to provide affordable, nutritious meals for your family without forgoing other financial necessities. In this hands-on cooking class, we’ll explore flavorful, healthy meals that won’t break the bank!

We all have a sweet tooth, but we feel guilty about indulging in dessert because it’s supposed to be bad for our health. But what about “healthy” desserts – don’t they taste terrible? In this cooking demonstration, we’ll discuss how dietitians think about dessert and how it can fit into an overall balanced diet.

Cooking for Energy: Meals That Fuel Your Day
Monday, June 8, from 5-7 p.m.
In this hands-on cooking class, we’ll prepare meals that support sustained energy, stable blood sugar and overall wellness. Participants will learn how to combine protein, fiber and healthy fats to build satisfying meals that avoid mid-day fatigue.

Better Barbecue: Backyard Favorites, Lightened Up
Monday, June 22, from 5-6:30 p.m.
Enjoy classic barbecue flavors lightened up with healthier cooking techniques. In this cooking demonstration, Chef Treyvon will cover marinades, dry rubs, grilling temperatures and lighter sides that complement summer cookouts without sacrificing flavor. Participants will come away with practical tips they can use at home – perfect for summer celebrations!

Summer Harvest: Seasonal Cooking Made Simple
Monday, July 6, from 5-7 p.m.
Celebrate the bounty of summer by learning to cook with seasonal produce. In this hands-on cooking class, we’ll practice knife skills and cooking techniques to let fresh ingredients shine without complicated recipes. You’ll gain confidence selecting and preparing farm market-fresh vegetables.
Menu: Herb-marinated chicken, roasted summer vegetable medley, fresh tomato and basil salad.

This free, hands-on cooking course is designed to support individuals managing diabetes. Participants will explore how nutrition impacts blood sugar control while building practical kitchen skills – from knife techniques to food safety. Each session includes the preparation of two or three diabetes-friendly, budget-conscious recipes, and you’ll receive groceries and recipes each week to recreate the meals at home.
Participant expectations:
- Complete brief pre- and post-class evaluations
- Provide a current A1c lab result (dated within two weeks of the first class) or agree to have A1c checked at both the first and final class sessions
- Commit to attending all six sessions
