The American Board of Surgery (ABS), the national certifying body for general surgeons and related specialists, is pleased to welcome Dr. K. Craig Kent as chair for 2019-2020.
Dr. Kent is dean of The Ohio State University College of Medicine, vice president for Health Sciences, and the Leslie H. and Abigail S. Wexner Dean’s Chair in Medicine. He completed both medical school and residency training at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by a research and clinical fellowship in vascular surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and an endovascular fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Kent is a vascular surgeon with an emphasis in carotid and aortic interventions. As an academic physician and clinical leader, Dr. Kent is a member of numerous organizations in surgery, having held leadership positions in several, including past president of the Society for Vascular Surgery, chair of the NIH: NHLBI Bioengineering, Technology and Surgical Sciences Study Section, and past president of the Society of Surgical Chairs. Throughout his career, Dr. Kent has been a busy clinical surgeon with a broad practice in open and endovascular intervention. He has significant experience in education with interest in entrustable professional activities (EPAs), and his research has spanned the clinical and basic sciences. He has authored over 325 articles and 65 book chapters, in addition to having served on the editorial boards of multiple medical journals.
Prior to his appointments at Ohio State, Dr. Kent served as chair of the Department of Surgery at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He also served as chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University and Columbia College of Physician Surgeons. He began his career in Boston, rising to the rank of associate professor of surgery at Harvard.
Dr. Kent was elected to serve on the Vascular Surgery Board (VSB-ABS) in 2008, and elected to the ABS board of directors in 2013 to represent the American Surgical Association.

About the ABS
The American Board of Surgery is an independent, nonprofit organization founded in 1937 for the purpose of certifying individuals who have met a defined standard of education, training and knowledge in the field of surgery. Surgeons certified by the ABS have completed at least five years of surgical training following medical school and successfully completed a written and oral examination process administered by the ABS. They must then maintain their board certification through ongoing learning and practice improvement activities.
The ABS offers board certification in general surgery, vascular surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, complex general surgical oncology, surgery of the hand, and hospice and palliative medicine. It is one of the 24 member boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
