Camp Inspires Underrepresented Students to Explore Medicine

COLUMBUS, Ohio – M.D. Camp, an intensive three-week summer program at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, offers high-achieving underrepresented minority students and recent graduates a rare medical experience. The annual M.D. Camp, which runs June 14 to July 3, aims at increasing the number of physicians who are underrepresented in medicine and who elect to serve underrepresented populations of patients.

M.D. Camp is open to high school juniors and seniors and recent high school graduates who are interested in pursuing careers in the health professions.

The camp strives to inspire students to pursue a career in medicine by challenging them intellectually, facilitating their academic and social development, and increasing their awareness of the special needs of under-served populations.

Throughout M.D. Camp, faculty and medical students serve as mentors and provide instruction in anatomy, physiology, pathology, medical specialties and current health issues. Participants will also attend workshops at The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s newly renovated Clinical Skills Education and Assessment Center, where they will have the chance to participate in hands-on activities in areas such as suturing, intubation and clinical skills techniques. Students will also shadow physicians at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center to gain exposure to research and case studies.
