COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2016 James 5K Race Series will include five run/walk events to support multiple myeloma, lung, leukemia, sarcoma and head and neck cancer research efforts at The Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center – James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James).
A combined 5,000-plus people are expected to participate in these five events, which collectively raise about $400,000 annually for local cancer research. The James 5K Race Series was established in 2014 to support these races by increasing awareness, dollars and participants and is expected to grow as more races are added.

Move MMORE 5K (9th annual)

This 5K & 1 Mile Run/Walk is hosted by Multiple Myeloma Opportunities for Research & Education (MMORE). Multiple myeloma is a blood cancer in the bone marrow with approximately 60,000 patients in the United States. Annually, there are 25,000 new patients diagnosed. There is no cure and 12,000 people die from the disease every year. MoveMMORE is a family-friendly, community-wide event open to runners and walkers of all abilities. Jack Roth Rock ”N” Run/Walk (11th Annual)

This family-friendly event features activities such as face painting, bounce houses, track dash for kids, food and music. The race takes more than 500 runners and walkers through central Bexley’s beautiful neighborhoods and finishes on the track at the high school. Proceeds benefit the Jack Roth Memorial Fund and groundbreaking lung cancer research efforts led by David Carbone, MD, PhD. Additional proceeds from the event support Camp Netaim, a program in Israel that Roth was passionate about which helps children with special needs. CLunger Beats 5000 (4th Annual)

CLunger Beats 5000 is held each year in memory of Cory Lunger and his courageous battle against acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). When Cory Lunger started this endeavor in March 2013, his goal was to raise $10,000 a year for five years. In its first two years the event has raised more than $45,000. Steps for Sarcoma (7th Annual)

More than 1,200 participants and dogs gather to support the annual Steps for Sarcoma 5K walk/run, a family- and pet-friendly event. The event includes survivor photos, face painting, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle. Steps for Sarcoma has become the largest run/walk in the nation for sarcoma support. Proceeds raised by the event will be used for sarcoma research and patient care at the OSUCCC – James. Sarcoma is a rare form of soft tissue or bone cancer that accounts for about 10 percent of childhood cancers and less than one percent of adult malignancies. Columbus Donut Run (3rd Annual)

The newest addition to the James 5K Race Series. The Donut Run is an annual 5K running and walking event to benefit the Joan’s Foundation for Head and Neck Cancer Research. All participants will receive a limited edition Columbus Donut Run tri-blend T-shirt and a half dozen donuts. Participants can enjoy donut holes at every kilometer, and donuts and Starbucks coffee at the finish line. The Columbus Donut Run has no paid employees, which ensures that all funds are allocated either to head and neck cancer research or the operations of the Joan’s Foundation.
