COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is pleased to announce Jay M. Anderson as its next chief operating officer, beginning July 1.
A native of the Columbus area, Jay is an established health system leader with significant experience in performance improvement, quality and operations. Since 2001, he has served in numerous roles at Northwestern Memorial Healthcare, now known as Northwestern Medicine.
At Ohio State, Anderson will be responsible for leading the execution of the vision, strategy and overall performance for all clinical enterprise operations – including all seven hospitals, as well as the ambulatory services division – and he will work to ensure alignment, collaboration and consistent implementation across the medical center. He will guide appropriate resource utilization and service line efficiencies, as well as oversee the delivery of consistent patient experiences and the highest quality care and outcomes, with a focus on affordability and accessibility.
Additionally, Anderson will help grow a comprehensive health platform, with services and capabilities ranging from telehealth to enhanced community, home-based and remote health and the broad range of acute and specialty care for patients at the bedside.
“We welcome Jay’s remarkable experience in performance improvement, quality and operations to Ohio State. Undoubtedly, his deep roots in Columbus and affinity for Ohio State, combined with his exceptional experience and leadership, will continue to accelerate the achievement of our strategic goals,” said Dr. Hal Paz executive vice president and chancellor for health affairs at The Ohio State University and chief executive officer at Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.
Anderson currently serves as the president of Kishwaukee & Valley West Hospitals, responsible for integrating a community health system into Northwestern Medicine’s academic system, with over 200 sites across the greater Chicago region, including 11 hospitals. Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the health system’s flagship, is ranked as a top 10 hospital in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, and is nationally recognized for achieving world-class outcomes, research and education.
Anderson also served as Northwestern Medicine’s senior vice president of pandemic operations, responsible for the COVID-19 testing strategy and execution across the academic health system. This included coordinating the COVID-19 testing efforts across five lab operations, developing a multiplatform strategy for PCR, antibody and antigen testing, and strategy execution of clinical guidelines to support allocation of resources in the constrained supply environment.
During his 20 years at Northwestern Medicine, he advanced to serve in increasingly senior executive operating roles across the clinical enterprise, overseeing areas including quality, analytics, performance and information technology.
Earlier in his career, Anderson served as a naval officer on the USS Mississippi from 1994-1997. While on active duty, he was awarded Naval Commendation and Naval Achievement medals for outstanding performance.
Anderson has a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago and a bachelor’s degree from Miami University.
