COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Nisonger Center’s Health Promotion and Healthcare Parity program has invited Positive Exposure to Columbus for two events that aim to improve attitudes and understanding of disability.

Rick Guidotti, director and photographer of Positive Exposure, will present to medical students, faculty and staff at noon on Monday (10/21) in room 550 on the fifth floor of The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Prior Health Sciences Library, 376 W 10th Ave. A gallery of photographs will be displayed on the fifth floor of Prior Health Sciences Library from October 21, 2013, through November 27, 2013.

Through this exhibition, medical students and staff have the opportunity to see people with disabilities in a different light. The Nisonger Center’s Health Promotion/Healthcare Parity program hopes to combat the disparities that exist in health care for people with disabilities.

“We often assume that the lives of people with disabilities are unfortunate, sad, and burdensome. Positive Exposure helps us appreciate the joy, individuality, and beauty in people with genetic, physical, and behavioral differences,” said Susan Havercamp, associate professor, psychiatry. “Viewing the work can be a transformational experience, which is why Rick’s motto is ‘Change how you see…See how you change.’”

Media representatives are asked to call Medical Center Media Relations at 614-293-3737 to make arrangements to cover the event at Prior Health Sciences Library.

Positive Exposure provides eye-opening multimedia presentations to challenge stigmas and assumptions often associated with people with disabilities. Their educational and advocacy programs reach around the globe to promote a more inclusive, compassionate world where differences are celebrated.

COSI will also be hosting an exhibition of Positive Exposure imagery from September 21, 2013, to January 5, 2014. Guidotti will come to COSI on Sunday (10/20) at noon for the grand opening of the museum’s Positive Exposure gallery where he will speak about the show.

The Nisonger Center, a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, is part of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and was founded in 1966 to provide assistance to people with disabilities and their families, service providers and organizations by promoting inclusion of people with disabilities in education, health, employment and community settings.
