COLUMBUS, Ohio – Throughout October, The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James) continues to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the critical need for breast cancer research via multiple partnerships, including:

Spielman Grid Iron Classics: 35 high school football games around Ohio will feature Pink-Out games, with school posters, pink pom-pom give-aways, awareness booths, field and parking lot painting and more, with some of the proceeds benefitting the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at OSUCCC – James

The James kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the Kroger Company and Columbus City Hall on Oct. 3, when Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman gave the signal to bathe City Hall in pink lights and initiate a citywide "pink-out."

Additionally, The James and Kroger's central Ohio stores have teamed up to sell pink, energy-efficient light bulbs throughout October to encourage central Ohioans to "pink their houses and businesses" by lighting up their front porches with the bulbs. For each purchase of the pink, energy-saving CFL light bulb ($5 each), a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research.

"These partnerships are designed to stress the importance of preventing, detecting, treating and eventually curing breast cancer," said Dr. William Farrar, breast surgical oncologist and director of the JamesCare Comprehensive Breast Center.

"All of these events and efforts provide an additional opportunity to educate women that there is no such thing as a routine mammogram," said Dr. Michael Caligiuri, CEO of The James and director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. "Our breast radiologists spend all day, every day reading and interpreting only mammograms, and this is a very important distinction because their trained eyes can lead to early detection."

National Cancer Institute research shows that patients who are treated at Comprehensive Cancer Centers like The James live longer.

According to American Cancer Society guidelines, monthly self breast exams, a physical breast exam by a physician and annual mammograms after age 40 are key to helping detect breast cancer as early as possible.

Mammograms are available at the new JamesCare Comprehensive Breast Center, 1145 Olentangy River Rd., as well as at other James central Ohio mammography services locations and The James' Mobile Mammography Unit. Each OSUCCC-James mammography services location as well as the Mobile Mammography Unit provide the latest in digital mammography technology, are accredited by the American College of Radiology and certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In addition, registered, licensed mammography experts administer the screenings.
