COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University College of Medicine is rated among the best in the country for research, according to the U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Medical Schools report.

Bolstered by an increase in total research awards during the 2024 fiscal year, the Ohio State College of Medicine is one of 16 tier 1 medical schools for research and is among 35 schools in tier 2 for primary care in the United States.

“Research is a fundamental part of academic medicine,” said Carol R. Bradford, MD, dean of the College of Medicine and vice president for Health Sciences at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “Ohio State has a longstanding history of supporting innovation and discovery among our faculty while developing the physician scientists of the future.”

The Ohio State College of Medicine’s research funding grew to $477.3 million in the past fiscal year. There were nearly 90 awards surpassing $1 million in areas with the potential to enhance lives and reduce illness and disability. These grants are funding significant studies in issues such as traumatic brain injury, gene therapy and maternal and pediatric medication safety.

With an aim to continually invest in its students, the Ohio State College of Medicine opened the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Center in the spring of 2024. The new home of medical education integrates learning, studying and wellness spaces so medical students and students from other health disciplines can have the optimal education experience. It features 36 state-of-the-art classrooms, small group and individual study spaces, a grand reading room, student lounge and workout facility.

“We are creating a collaborative campus for interprofessional education across the health sciences and strengthening the interdisciplinary curriculum at Ohio State,” Bradford said.

The Ohio State College of Medicine will expand primary care education as it welcomes the first class of students into the new Community Medicine Medical Degree Track in August. Medical students in this program will train to care for patients in rural and smaller communities. They will complete their first two years of medical school at Ohio State in Columbus and finish the remaining two years of core clinical experiences within Bon Secours Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.

This edition of Best Medical Schools provides prospective medical students with access to data from medical schools in research and primary care in a four-tier system instead of traditional rankings. By collecting graduate school data annually, U.S. News can present actionable data on enrollment, faculty-student ratio and other quality indicators that help prospective students make informed decisions.
