COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Dr.  Mary Jo Welker (43054), a family physician at The Ohio State University Medical Center, has been elected president of the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation Board of Trustees.

Previously, Welker served as treasurer and vice president of the AAFP Foundation Board of Trustees. The AAFP Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

As president of the AAFP Foundation, Welker will lead the organization in its efforts to advance the values of family medicine by promoting humanitarian, educational, and scientific initiatives that improve the health of all people.

At The Ohio State University, Welker is executive director of the Primary Care Network and the associate dean for primary care. She also serves as the chair for the Department of Family and Community Medicine. She is a member of the board of directors for Ohio State University Physicians and is currently serving as the treasurer and chair of the finance committee.

Welker served as a member of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors from 1986-2005, the Ohio State Medical Association Board of Trustees from 1993-1997, and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors from 2002-2005. She served as president of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians from 1993-1994.

Welker is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education.
