Opportunities

Community volunteers are over 18 years of age and are not currently undergraduate students. Community volunteers serve in areas throughout the medical center, providing information and service to families and visitors and assisting staff in patient care areas.

  • Wayfinding/Escorting: Greet and guide families and visitors to their destinations.
  • Waiting Room Greeter: Support family members in waiting areas.
  • Restful Nights: Visit patients in the evenings with amenities for a calm environment.
  • Chemotherapy Clinic Assistant: Provide comfort and refreshments to patients and families.
  • Hope’s Boutique: Assist patients with questions, purchases, and organize merchandise.
  • Piano with Purpose: Play music in various lobbies to share your musical talents.
  • Rock-A-Bye: Provide comfort and care to infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Requirements

  • All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
  • Hold a heartfelt desire to assist others and deliver outstanding service to patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Purchase of a volunteer uniform ($27 plus tax)
  • Volunteers are asked to commit 2-3 hours per week for at least six months.

Community Volunteer Screening Process

Once you have completed the online application, you will be contacted regarding the following steps:

  • Screening information session
  • Criminal background check (conducted by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, including fingerprints)
  • Vaccine Verification for the following immunity:
    • Varicella
    • Measles/Mumps/Rubella
    • Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap)
    • Tuberculin Skin Test or QFT
  • Flu vaccine required November through March; new volunteers must provide documentation
  • Volunteer orientation
  • TB screening or other immunizations may be required, depending on the activity
  • Activity-specific training may be required, depending on activity
