Paying it forward: Teaching staff to provide top-notch care
Thomas Cook, CCMA, lead medical assistant, preceptor
We have an amazing team, and that makes coming to work enjoyable. Everyone is always willing to jump in and assist each other.
As lead medical assistant in General Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties, Thomas Cook appreciates having the ability to play a greater role in the day-to-day operations of the clinic and the teaching of staff members.
“It’s a good opportunity for me to train staff to provide top-notch, efficient care while being able to interact with patients every day,” he says.
Thomas, a member of Ohio State University Physicians, Inc., teaches new medical assistants at Ohio State Outpatient Care Dublin.
Each patient who comes into the facility is likely to interact with a medical assistant while receiving care, and Tom is grateful for the opportunity to help them master their skills.
“When I train a new staff member, and they then go and excel at their job to the degree that they begin training others, that makes me very proud,” he says.
Tom also is responsible for managing a diverse team of clinical staff and the daily functions of the General Internal Medicine clinic.
“I enjoy getting to know people, and being a lead medical assistant is all about interaction with staff and patients,” he says. “It’s very satisfying to have a career that allows me to make a difference in the lives of the patients at our clinic every day.”
