I grew up in the Ohio Valley in a small town called Brilliant. It’s one of those towns with just a stoplight, gas station, library, and about two other things. I am the baby of six kids and lived across the street from my grandparents. I had a safe and imaginative childhood. We were out from sunup to sundown playing tag, kick the can, and riding bikes. My parents worked two jobs and didn’t have much to show for it. I started babysitting at 11 years old and had my first official job by 14. I played sports in school, with softball, basketball, and volleyball being my favorites. I was also in the band through the ninth grade. As kids, we were creative and got dirty outside every chance we could get. We didn’t really watch much TV and were always playing games together.
Education and Training
I worked two jobs to pay for college. I worked as a server for a wedding venue and as a waitress at Longhorn Steakhouse. I initially went to school for psychology and spent a whole year before realizing that it didn’t feel quite right. I made the decision to switch career paths and began pursuing nursing at a small school called Trinity. It was a super-strict Catholic school in Steubenville, Ohio. We started with 80 students and ended with only 36. It was the kind of school that if you failed a test, you failed the program. I graduated Trinity nursing school in 2004 when I was 22 years old.
After I graduated nursing school, I moved to Columbus for better opportunity and for a change in scenery. I knew I couldn’t stay in such a small town forever. I started working in the ED at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center East Hospital in February 2005 and continued there until July of 2024. I loved my time in the ED. I met so many amazing people and discovered so much about myself and my life. I learned so many things about nursing and people. I honestly believe that the ED is a “Jack of all trades and master of none.” I also made friends that will last a lifetime. I truly appreciate all the skills that the ED taught me. I loved never knowing what the day would bring. When COVID hit, I realized I had a chance to continue my education. I didn’t think I would leave the ED, but I didn’t want to miss out on opportunities. I got my BSN from Ohio University during COVID, while also homeschooling my kids for a year and working full time. Even though I wasn’t looking, I am so grateful that I was recommended for the stroke coordinator position by my ED management. It is a position that I never could have imagined when I first started nursing almost 20 years ago and one, I am incredibly grateful for.
Hobbies and Passions
I love reading, doing yoga, spending time with family, walking my dog, and spending time outside. I enjoy being active, serving at my church, and volunteering at my kids’ school. I truly love new experiences and trying new foods. I also love dancing and spending time with friends.
Fun Fact About Me
I did a bit of modeling and acting (very small) in my 20s. I can rap (don’t ask) And as much as I love people, I cherish my alone time and will take myself on dates and vacations.
