Biography

As an orthopedic surgeon at Ohio State, I specialize in total joint replacement and reconstructive procedures of the hip and knee for problems caused by arthritis, trauma, developmental abnormalities and infection.

The goal of our comprehensive adult reconstructive surgery program is to deliver the very best care to our patients in a compassionate and timely fashion. I believe that the best care is delivered through a team approach. In addition to seeing me, my patients meet with nurses, physician's assistants and physical therapists.

I've had a lifelong interest not just in clinical practice, but also in education and research. Ohio State is among the largest and finest academic medical centers in the country. What I enjoy most about working at Ohio State is the opportunity to deliver optimum care to my patients.

When I have free time, I enjoy fly-fishing, restoring old muscle cars and golfing. I am a bicycling addict and try to ride my road bike whenever possible. My wife and I recently became empty nesters, as we've just sent our last college graduate off to a career in Chicago. However, my Old English Sheepdog and four cats continue to keep us company.

Academics and research

After schooling, I joined Dr. Engh in clinical practice at the Anderson Clinic. After 16 years I returned home to Columbus and currently serves as Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief, Adult Reconstructive Surgery at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. In 2013, I was named Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and occupies the Frank J. Kloenne Chair in Orthopaedics.

I have held many academic and administrative positions, while maintaining an active interest in clinical research and product design. I am a member of the Hip Society, the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and is on the Editorial Boards of several peer-reviewed journals. I have participated in the design of several total hip and knee replacements. I am the author of over 50 journal articles and book chapters and has given over 400 lectures in the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. I specialize in total hip and knee replacement and am particularly interested in complex primary and revision surgery.

I am recipient of 2012 Achievement Award from American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) for my "Outstanding Contributions to the Profession of Orthopaedic Surgery". I also currently serve as the President of the Columbus Orthopaedic Society.
