Biography
Over my 22-year career in the US Army, I learned to be a leader while gaining empathy for our wounded warriors as they live with devastating injuries to their feet and ankles. Caring for these soldiers was an honor and it prepared me for my career at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center.
I’m an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon specializing in sports medicine and arthroscopic procedures. I’m passionate about caring for patients and developing necessary procedures because lower extremity injuries can be very disabling and painful. I strive to be a good listener first, understanding my patients’ expectations and goals.
As a prior farm kid, I greatly appreciated the opportunities given to me that allowed me to study medicine. In order to pay it forward, I’m an active mentor for residents and medical students, and give them opportunities to get involved in research and clinical activities. I have helped develop orthopedics surgical simulation training in order to improve patient safety while providing residents a safe, protected environment to grow and develop. Mentorship is paramount–balancing our faith, family, friends and a career can be difficult, but having a mentor makes it much easier.
Being an associate professor at The Ohio State University means I’m on the cutting edge of medicine–publishing research, learning new techniques and educating other surgeons as an associate master instructor of arthroscopy. My research is all directed at improving my patients’ outcomes. I have published several new surgical techniques, and have worked to improve assistive devices (crutches) and the transition to a hands-free crutch. I’m also developing a dynamic foot and ankle research consortium to further enhance patient care.
In my free time, I enjoy continuing to serve in the Army Reserve as well as four-wheeling, camping and fishing with my family and friends.

Academics and research
I am a foot and ankle sports specialist, and a leading expert in sports injuries and rehabilitation. I was selected as one of the top three foot and ankle specialists by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and I’ve traveled across Europe teaching and sharing sports medicine and rehabilitation. My surgical interests include minimally invasive nanoarthroscopy for the treatment of cartilage and Achilles tendon sports injuries. Currently, I am chief of the Foot and Ankle Division of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and I am also the team foot and ankle surgeon for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
My research focuses on Achilles tendon surgical repairs and accelerated rehabilitation, ankle instability, and innovative methods of repair with accelerated return to sports.
I continue to innovate new, advanced techniques, with more than 80 peer-reviewed articles and three U.S. patents. Recently, I was named to Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors list and Avant Garde Health’s Healthcare Research All Stars List “Top 5% Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Surgeons in the U.S.”
I am a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army Reserve, with more than 27 years of service and three combat tours with Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), receiving a Bronze Star Medal for direct combat actions. The Army also awarded me the prestigious Order of Military Medical Merit for Distinguished service to the Medical Corps. While serving as a member of JSOC, I was the team physician for the U.S. Army Special Forces, and for other government agencies.

I felt like he was condescending. I was told at a previous visit that they wouldn't do surgery on my broken foot until I was 12 months out. Ok, so came back short of 14 months to be told still not healed but now won't do surgery to try to fix it because it's been so long since it happened. None of the responses made sense.

I was impressed with Dr. Martin's knowledge, concern, and advice for my foot fractures.
I had a surgery with Dr. Martin, I heard it went well but I did not get to talk to him afterwards. I was hoping to talk to him after the surgery to hear about the surgery and hear any precautions. I think it is best for a patient to be able to spend at least a little time with the surgeon after the surgery to check up on things and answer any remaining questions.
Although dr. Martin did not give me the outcome I wanted he did explain the reasons why. And discussed alternative options for me. I like that he is very honest and I respect and appreciate his work and opinions on my condition
