Biography
As a family medicine physician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, I treat patients with asthma, exercise induced asthma, athletic injuries, diabetes and hypertension. I also specialize in adolescent medicine and pediatrics, travel medicine, preconception care, contraception, medical education and health promotion. I think it’s important for patients to establish a relationship with a family physician they can trust.
I have a special interest in preventive medicine and vaccinations. I strongly promote preventive health with my patients in order to keep them from getting too sick in the first place. I believe that family medicine is the cornerstone of good healthcare. As family medicine physicians, we provide a basic service that everyone needs.
My favorite part about working at Ohio State is the opportunity to work with and teach medical students. It’s also a great location with good benefits.
When I’m not working, I enjoy traveling, cooking and spending time with my children.

Academics and research
I joined The Ohio State University's Department of Family and Community Medicine in November 2014 after having spent my first three years out of residency in private practice with the Licking Memorial Health System. I came back to OSU to be more involved in teaching and to work closer to where I live in New Albany.
I see patients exclusively at the Ohio State University Family Medicine office at Healthy New Albany, but I am also involved with medical student education, especially of third-year medical students during their family medicine clerkship. I serve as the unit director for family medicine in that role, and also help to facilitate third-year students during their small group learning. I am also the lead physician for medical student education here in New Albany.
I have a passion for preventive medicine, especially vaccinations. I have developed community education programs on vaccinations that I have given here in New Albany.

He answered all my questions and was concerned with my overall health.
I never got on the table. He did not listen to my heart. Apparently modern "wellness" visits are very different from the old school physical.
Dr Farrell is patient and listens carefully
Very attentive and very good at what he does.
Good at managing expectations of visit, including listening and providing advice.
Very kind and knowledgeable. Put my child at ease. He Is very good with kids and explained everything so the child could understand as well.

Dr. Farrell always explains things so that you understand
Never checked my heart or lungs past 5 years
Dr Farrell is as very thorough in answering all my concerns
Excellent. Listens, explains, respects my concerns.
The provider said I had sciatica based on my symptoms and gave me a referral for PT. This didn't make any sense for me because he didn't schedule an image to confirm his diagnosis. Or, explain why an image wasn't necessary. I asked for a referral to see an orthopedic, which he gave. I thought it was necessary since he diagnosed me with sciatica with no pain.
Dr Farrell listened to and addressed any concerns I might have had. He was very attentive and really cared about my overall well being.
Dr. Farrell is very bright, professional and is a great listener. He always shows genuine concern for me and my healthcare path.
Dr Farrell has been the best provider for me and my son. We would not want anyone else
Takes time to listen to my concerns. Always gives honest & helpful feedback.
Very good at determining the problem.
Dr Mathew Farrell was excellent
Dr. Farrell assisted me in a weight loss journey that took me from obese to a hairline shy of normal. He introduced me to the mindfulness concept which has helped with my weight loss and also stress management. He is encouraging me to engage in Physical Therapy for my arthritis and supports my goal of solving this problem with exercise, not drugs. All good experiences.
Like him very much
My doctor explained everything in an easy to understand manner and gave me a referral to a specialist that I requested.
Dr Farrell is thorough and caring. Very respectful of us and our child
I was given a form to fill out about anxiety/depression, circled some things and it was never addressed.
Seems to be a good Dr.
I was offered flu and covid vaccines. When I declined the covid vaccine Dr. Farrell would not take no for an answer. He accompanied his judgmental rebukes with phrases like "You know this isn't going away right" and "you're making a mistake". I CHOSE to use Ohio State for my elective medicine and now I am choosing to take my business elsewhere. When my decision were met with the classic guilt trip which led me to overturn my decision and get the vaccine I subsequently missed work due to the side effects. I am beyond furious with this practice's continued focus on optics and focusing less on the wishes of the patient. Imagine what judgment could come to light if I had to discuss ANY actual problems regarding my health. I'm taking my business elsewhere.
Dr. Matthew Farrell, has been our Doctor for quite awhile. I don't see us using any other providers
Took time to listen to my symptoms & review previous treatment I received. Prescribed new med. Also encouraged to get Covid vaccine now since Covid is spreading.

He was just as he always is, amazing.
Dr. Farrell is always very courteous, pleasant, thorough, and appropriately attentive to my health concerns each appointment.
Dr. Farrell is always very professional, he listens and really cares about our concerns
The provider did not explain to my child what was happening and why during all parts of the physical exam, particularly the examination of genitals. It would be my preference that the provider offer more information and explanation. I will also ask for this at my next visit.
The Doctor took time to listen to my concerns and addressed my issues.
