About Me
As an anesthesiologist with training in critical care medicine, I practice in the perioperative setting and the intensive care unit (ICU). Acutely ill patients often require surgery, and whether their process begins with or leads to an operation, these patients require a physician who is experienced in both areas. Strategies initiated in the ICU often need to be continued in the operating room. Similarly, operating room skills such as airway management, ventilatory support, resuscitation, sedation and pain control must carry over into the ICU. Key information must flow clearly and efficiently among multiple teams as a patient transitions between these two environments.
In 2020, I assumed the role of director for the anesthesiology critical care medicine fellowship. Teaching and learning go hand in hand at an academic center, and I am extremely proud to work with a large, enthusiastic group of critical care specialists who inspire, lead and educate every day. In addition to critical care and education, my areas of interest include improving health care quality and management of critical events. As such, I serve on several hospital committees including the Anesthesiology Quality Committee, Trauma Quality Management Committee and the Code Blue Emergency Response Team Committee. In 2019, I helped start the Ohio State Difficult Airway Response Team. This multidisciplinary team responds to respiratory emergencies in patients who have a difficult airway and are at risk for severe complications.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 09/30/2024, Dr. Lyaker has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
