About Me

As a gastroenterologist at Ohio State and the director of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, I specialize in pancreatic disease and endoscopic procedures, providing a welcome alternative to surgical interventions. I strive to provide comprehensive, empathetic and compassionate care to all my patients.

Our division’s mission is to provide multi-disciplinary pancreatic and esophageal care, as well as to enhance patient experience by expediting care in a compassionate yet efficient environment.

My areas of research include pancreatic disease, acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreas cysts, hereditary pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. As a clinical research investigator for over 20 years, I have published original pancreatic research and received funding from government, academic and private institutions. Through this funding, I have acquired the research experience to perform clinical trials and multi-center collaborations that have resulted in publications from medical institutions across the globe, and in national institutions including the University of Pittsburgh, Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Dartmouth, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Johns Hopkins, Boston Children’s and Columbia University.

I was raised in Ohio, and each step of my training and early career took place here. After spending six years in Boston at the Harvard University Brigham and Women’s Hospital, I knew it was time to come home and serve the community I know and love – the great state of Ohio. I’m honored to serve as the director of this fine division and look forward to a bright future.

Consulting and Related Relationships

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.

As of 12/20/2018, Dr. Conwell has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
