Biography
I am a neurologist, specializing in autonomic disorders and neurologic conditions that affect the autonomic nervous system, at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. My practice focuses on diagnosing and treating patients with primary autonomic disorders. These include pure autonomic failure, autoimmune disorders with autonomic dysfunction, diabetic autonomic neuropathies and also neurological diseases associated with autonomic dysfunction.
As the only autonomic disorders specialist in Ohio, I provide highly specialized care for patients with complex and often misunderstood conditions. I care for individuals with disorders such as Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy, and dementia with Lewy bodies when autonomic dysfunction is part of their condition.
I understand that many patients with autonomic disorders experience delays in diagnosis or receive treatments that do not fully address their symptoms. Because autonomic medicine is a highly subspecialized field with few fellowship-trained physicians, I am committed to providing expert evaluation, accurate diagnosis and individualized treatment plans that help patients better manage their condition and improve their quality of life.

Academics and research
I am an assistant professor of Neurology in The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and my research focuses on autonomic disorders and neuroimmunology. I specialize in quantitative research approaches, including observational studies, randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, to better understand complex neurological diseases and improve evidence-based care.
My research interests center on the mechanisms, diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the autonomic nervous system, as well as the role of immune-mediated processes in neurological disease. Through clinical and translational research, I seek to advance our understanding of autonomic dysfunction and identify strategies that can lead to earlier recognition, more precise diagnosis and improved therapeutic options for these diseases.
I have contributed to phase II and phase III clinical trials involving neurological and autonomic disorders. These studies support medical experts’ ongoing efforts to evaluate emerging treatments and expand the scientific knowledge base in autonomic medicine and neuroimmunology.
My long-term research goals are to advance the field of autonomic disorders through rigorous clinical investigation and to strengthen the connection between scientific discovery and patient outcomes. By applying quantitative research methods across a range of study designs, I aim to generate evidence that improves our understanding of disease mechanisms and informs future therapeutic development.

Consulting and related relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 11/3/2025, Edwin Serrano Lopez has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
