Biography
As a gastroenterologist, I treat patients with a variety of GI issues and offer therapeutic endoscopy procedures as part of management for pancreatobiliary disorders and GI cancers. In addition, I specialize in offering bariatric endoscopic therapies for patients struggling with obesity or experiencing postsurgical complications. My research interests are primarily focused on advanced endoscopic procedures and innovation in endobariatric treatments, as well as obesity.
It’s an exciting time to be at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and I am honored to be part of a multidisciplinary effort to enhance the care we provide to our patients. I led the development of a bariatric endoscopy unit, which will be integrated with the wider bariatric program. It’s inspiring to work alongside such exceptional colleagues who always put patient well-being first, and I’m proud to be part of the gastroenterology team.
My patients can expect compassionate care and an approach based on evidence-based medicine. I prioritize patient education and work to ensure my patients fully understand their disorder, the treatments available and the long-term management options.
I appreciate that being at an academic medical center allows for opportunities to participate in clinical trials and to help develop innovative procedures that will benefit patients. My role also includes helping to train future physicians. Medical students, internal medicine residents and GI fellows rotate with me, and I provide mentorship to students interested in pursuing gastroenterology as a specialty.
When I’m not working, I love spending time with my family. I enjoy traveling, hiking, biking, watching movies and playing soccer.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 11/3/2025, Hamza Shah has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
