Biography
As an internist, I treat adult patients for a wide variety of conditions and collaborate closely with specialists to ensure each patient receives the most appropriate and optimal care possible. I lead the Executive Health program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center as medical director.
I enjoy building relationships with patients and helping them be the healthiest and happiest versions of themselves while juggling family and work demands. My patients typically lead busy lifestyles, and Executive Health is well positioned to provide customized treatments attending to even the smallest details. Ohio State is a wonderful place to do this work because of the community support, the access to plentiful resources and the opportunity to practice alongside such committed team members.
I think one of my best tools is relatability, and I strive to ensure each patient is fully comfortable with what we have covered in a visit. I always explain medical issues in an understandable way, leave plenty of time for questions and reassure patients that there are other treatment options if 'plan A' doesn’t obtain the desired result.
I recently completed an MBA at the age of 50, which I believe has given me a unique perspective on leadership. My leadership roles at Ohio State include serving as the medical director for Utilization Management, the chair of the Executive Services Advisory Council and the chair of the Clinical Resources Utilization Committee. In addition, I was honored to have led the early implementation of the peer-to-peer hospital admission review process, which resulted in improved coverage for patients and accurate utilization for the hospital. My responsibilities also include serving on The Ohio State University College of Medicine admissions committee and helping pre-med students prepare for their medical school applications.
When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling and fly fishing.

Consulting and related relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 11/3/2025, James Lawlor has reported no relationships with companies or entities.

Good experience: Dr. Lawlor took the time to listen to my concerns and discuss options for treatment.
All ok
I had a number of unrelated concerns. Each was dealt with in a positive way.
Everything is first Class.
Dr Lawlor spent a lot of time with me and I felt heard. My anxiety and depression and the stress that I am feeling as a caregiver for my husband with dementia.
All excellent.
All good
Outstanding. I came in for a physical and knew we would spend all the time I needed. Dr Lawlor is a gem. This is the same rating I would give to every visit. Unconstrained by the insurance industries model forcing doctors to see tons of patients to either something like 7 minutesthis model is exceptional and I am happy to pay extra for it.
