About Me

Juan Crestanello, MD, is a professor of Surgery and Director of the Division of Cardiac Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Dr. Crestanello earned his medical degree from the University of the Republic of Uruguay Medical School. He completed surgical residencies at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia and the University of Maryland in Baltimore. In addition, Dr. Crestanello completed his residency in thoracic surgery at Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in Rochester, Minn.

Dr. Crestanello’s research on mitochondria production of reactive oxygen species has been NIH funded through the American College of Surgeons and the Thoracic Surgery Foundation for Research and Education since 2006. Dr. Crestanello was also part of a collaborative effort to establish the Structural Heart Disease Program for the treatment and evaluation of patients with heart valve disease and adult congenital pathologies.

His research interests include robotic and minimally invasive valve surgery, as well as hybrid coronary revascularization. Dr. Crestanello’s clinical research includes mitral valve annuloplasty in patients with low ejection fraction and the characterization of hyponatremia during cardiac surgery and its effects on outcomes.
