Biography
I am Lora Black, PhD, and I specialize in the psychological treatment of chronic pain conditions. My psychology practice at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center focuses on patients with hypermobility spectrum disorders, hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, chronic female pelvic pain and on the unique needs of young adults living with chronic pain. I provide evidence-based psychological care that helps patients improve functioning, manage symptoms and enhance quality of life while aligning treatment with their individual goals and values. I believe that effective chronic pain care is personalized, collaborative and centered on the whole person.
As a psychologist in the Division of Psychology, I work closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure that patients receive comprehensive care tailored to their unique needs. I partner with patients to better understand the physical, emotional and social factors that influence their health, helping them develop practical strategies to navigate the challenges of living with chronic pain.
In addition to my clinical work, I am passionate about research focused on the lived experiences and psychosocial functioning of individuals with chronic pain conditions. Through this work, I seek to advance our understanding of the factors that shape patient well-being and support the development of more effective, patient-centered approaches to care.

Academics and research
I am Lora Black, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and as a psychologist I specialize in psychosocial functioning and treatment of chronic pain conditions. My research focuses on hypermobility spectrum disorders, hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, qualitative and mixed-methods research and on understanding the lived experiences of individuals with chronic pain conditions.
My work seeks to advance understanding of how chronic pain affects daily functioning, well-being and quality of life. Through qualitative and mixed-methods approaches, I explore the experiences of people living with complex chronic pain conditions to identify factors that influence health outcomes and inform patient-centered care strategies.
I am particularly interested in the psychosocial dimensions of chronic pain and in developing evidence-based approaches that support individuals with hypermobility spectrum disorders and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. My research aims to generate insights that improve clinical care, enhance patient outcomes and address challenges that are most meaningful to those living with these conditions.
I serve as a co-investigator on National Institutes of Health-funded research, including R01NS135833, and previously served as a site co-investigator and interventionalist on 1U24AR076730-01. In addition to my research and clinical responsibilities, I am passionate about educating and mentoring the next generation of providers.
