Biography

I am Maria Kapral, PT, DPT, and as a physical therapist I specialize in pelvic health physical therapy, pelvic pain conditions and gender-affirming pelvic healthcare at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. My practice focuses on individualized, trauma-informed care that helps patients feel supported, empowered and actively involved in their wellness journeys.

I became a physical therapist because of my own experiences navigating the healthcare system. Those experiences shaped my commitment to creating a comfortable, inclusive and productive environment where patients can address sensitive concerns, build confidence and take charge of their health. I provide care for a wide range of pelvic health conditions and have a special interest in gender-affirming pelvic health physical therapy and the treatment of pelvic pain. My approach is grounded in trauma-informed principles that recognize each patient’s unique experiences and goals.

In addition to patient care, I am committed to advancing pelvic health education and mentorship. I serve as program director for the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Pelvic & Women’s Health Physical Therapy Residency Program, and I mentor clinicians caring for advanced patient populations. These roles challenge me to continue expanding my own knowledge and skills while helping develop the next generation of pelvic health specialists.

I also serve as co-chair of the Community Engagement Subcommittee of the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Gender Affirming Care Committee and lead the Gender-Affirming Care Program within the pelvic health team. Through these leadership roles, I work to improve access to inclusive, evidence-based care and foster collaboration across disciplines.

My professional highlights include getting board certification in pelvic and women’s health physical therapy, certification as a lymphedema therapist, getting recognition as an APTA-credentialed clinical instructor and making contributions to national consensus statements and clinical guidance related to pelvic floor rehabilitation and gender-affirming care.

Consulting and related relationships

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
