Biography

I believe a commitment to wellness practices – which includes fostering loving relationships, regular exercise, healthy eating, mindfulness practices and allowing time for play – is the mainstay of healthy living. As an internal medicine physician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, I am passionate about helping my patients improve their overall wellness, prevent disease and manage chronic pain with lifestyle methods.

I diagnose and treat a wide variety of acute and chronic conditions in adults and children. For my pediatric patients, monitoring healthy growth and development is important. I also provide anticipatory guidance, such as information about what to expect as children and teens continue to grow.

When patients come to see me, they can expect a collaborative relationship. I prioritize getting to know each patient and understanding what matters most to them. My clinical interests include finding ways to improve communication with patients, and my research is focused on advancing medical education.

Having trained here at The Ohio State University for both medical school and residency, I came to appreciate the benefits of working at a large academic medical center as well as the joy of teaching. My role at Ohio State includes helping to train the next generation of physicians and I find this to be a rewarding part of the job.

I work closely with medical students and residents on a regular basis. I have also mentored internal medicine pediatrics residents for several years. In addition, I serve as the unit director of Ambulatory Internal Medicine for the third-year primary care clerkship and as an expert educator for Evaluation and Assessment with a focus on Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).

When I am not working, I love spending quality time with my family. My wife and kids and I enjoy talking, laughing, walking, playing and eating, especially outdoors.

Dr. Flanigan was as always kind, personable, and knowledgeable of my medical history. It was clear he had reviewed records of my recent colonoscopy. He took the time to ask how I was doing personally, not just medically, which made me feel at ease and is always something I appreciate as a patient.

The best experience I have every time I visit Dr. Flanigan is being able to talk to him and knowing he hears me. I've discovered new probiotics with clinical backing, vitamin supplements on the NIH website and he always listens...and he's not afraid to tell me when I have a BAD idea. I value his input & follow his directions.

At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
