Biography

The hand is a visual and functional marvel that is crucial for maintaining independence in our day-to-day lives. As a plastic surgeon who specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery, I strive to restore form and function to my patients.

During each patient encounter, I treat everyone with dignity, respect and kindness. In order to understand how I can best partner with my patients and individualize the care I provide, I take the time to get to know each one so that I can better grasp their problem in the context of their daily life. The opportunity to see my patients return to doing the work and activities they love is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.

In addition to treating patients, I enjoy teaching and mentoring the next generation of doctors and surgeons here at The Ohio State University. Our surgeons, fellows and residents offer truly exceptional care to our patients, and it is a privilege to work as a part of this team.

In my free time, I enjoy staying active and being outdoors, playing basketball, baseball and golf, as well as traveling, cooking and spending time with my wonderful family. I also have a passion for global surgery and have participated in surgical mission trips to Kenya, Peru, Nicaragua and Mexico.

Patient Comments

Dr. Smucker was excellent. He was able to obtain my x-rays that were done previously that day and was able to pinpoint my problem and remedy this with his medical solution. Dr. Schmucker was able to get me into surgery within 24 hours of my visit.

    Very professional

  • Reviewed on Sep 27, 2025

Dr. Shmucker was thorough and provided me answers to questions I had about future use of my hand

  • Reviewed on Sep 24, 2025

He never really told me anything about what he thought was wrong. He quickly said the name once, and then briefly talked about the causes and the remedy. However, I have no idea what I should be looking for in the way of improvement, nor do I know what he said I have, meaning I am unable to research the condition.
