About Me

The hand is a visual and functional marvel that is crucial for maintaining independence in our day-to-day lives. As a plastic surgeon who specializes in hand and upper extremity surgery, I strive to restore form and function to my patients.

During each patient encounter, I treat everyone with dignity, respect and kindness. In order to understand how I can best partner with my patients and individualize the care I provide, I take the time to get to know each one so that I can better grasp their problem in the context of their daily life. The opportunity to see my patients return to doing the work and activities they love is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.

In addition to treating patients, I enjoy teaching and mentoring the next generation of doctors and surgeons here at The Ohio State University. Our surgeons, fellows and residents offer truly exceptional care to our patients, and it is a privilege to work as a part of this team.

In my free time, I enjoy staying active and being outdoors, playing basketball, baseball and golf, as well as traveling, cooking and spending time with my wonderful family. I also have a passion for global surgery and have participated in surgical mission trips to Kenya, Peru, Nicaragua and Mexico.

Excellent treatment. Diagnose the problem and told me about possible future treatment options. Have another surgery scheduled the next week. Told me to wait until recover from this surgery as my arm will be in sling before dicussing possible hand surgery.

I liked Dr. Schmucker, but I had seen two people during this visit prior to seeing him and there were parts of my medical history (important to this visit) that he didn't seem familiar with. I had gone over this information with at least one person right before seeing him. They all seemed to be on the same team, but perhaps had not communicated everything? I saw a physician extender who put me in the exam room and a resident, I think.
