Biography
I became a family physician because I am passionate about helping people achieve their health goals through personalized, evidence-based care. My approach emphasizes preventive medicine, and I focus on giving my patients the tools they need to stay healthy and moving.
I treat acute illnesses and also chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. I offer osteopathic manipulative therapy, which is a hands-on approach to relieve various musculoskeletal complaints that can affect quality of life. I am also committed to providing gender-affirming care for the LGBTQ+ community.
My personal philosophy of medicine involves teaching patients about their conditions and empowering them to make choices that work best for them. I appreciate the depth and breadth that family medicine offers and enjoy following patients across the lifespan. I treat my patients as an extension of my family, and I value building trusting relationships with them. It’s a privilege to help them meet their health goals and become the best versions of themselves.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 11/3/2025, Shannon Avena has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
