Biography

I am Sylvia Escolero, MD, and I specialize in diagnosing and treating headache disorders, including migraine and other complex headache conditions. My practice at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center focuses on providing comprehensive neurological care, with an emphasis on individualized headache management and evidence-based treatment strategies.

I believe effective headache care starts with understanding how a patient's symptoms affect their daily life, goals and overall well-being. I take a collaborative approach to care, working closely with patients to develop personalized treatment plans that align with their needs and help improve their quality of life.

As a physician in the Department of Neurology in the Neurological Institute at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, I care for patients with headache disorders, including migraine and chronic migraine. I offer a range of preventive and acute headache therapies, and I specialize in procedural treatments such as Botox® injections for chronic migraine, nerve blocks and other interventions designed to reduce headache frequency and severity.

My training includes a Neurology residency and advanced fellowship training in Headache Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. This provided a strong foundation in the diagnosis and management of complex neurological and headache conditions. I am committed to helping patients better understand their condition, navigate treatment options and achieve meaningful improvements in daily function and well-being.

Academics and research

I am Sylvia Escolero, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Neurology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and I specialize in headache medicine, migraine, patient education and improving access to specialty headache care. My research focuses on headache outcomes, clinical research and practical strategies to improve the delivery of specialty headache care.

My research interests center on helping patients better understand headache disorders and available treatment options. I am particularly interested in developing and evaluating educational approaches that support informed decision-making and improve the patient experience.

A major focus of my work is identifying and addressing barriers that limit access to specialty headache care. Through clinical research, I investigate strategies that can help patients receive timely, effective care while improving outcomes for individuals living with headache disorders, including migraine.

Teaching and mentorship have played an important role in my career development. Working with resident physicians and medical students has strengthened my commitment to academic medicine and reinforced the importance of clear communication, curiosity and lifelong learning.

My professional accomplishments include receiving the American Headache Society's Frontiers in Headache Research Scholarship Award, serving as a physician advocate for Headache on the Hill through the Alliance for Headache Disorders Advocacy, and advancing research focused on patient education and access to specialty headache care. This work continues to guide my future research goals as I seek practical, patient-centered solutions that improve headache care delivery and outcomes.
