Biography
As a cardiac surgeon, I treat patients for various conditions including aortic aneurysms, arrhythmias, congenital heart defects, coronary artery diseases and heart valve diseases. I perform both open and minimally invasive cardiovascular surgical procedures and organ transplant surgeries. I’m excited to continue my career in academic medicine here at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and proud to help pave the way for others as the first female cardiac surgeon in the Division of Cardiac Surgery.
My training has equipped me with the most up-to-date techniques and evidence-based practices, but my attention to detail, empathy and commitment to patient-centered care set me apart. I believe trust is the foundation of healing, and I work hard to earn that trust from patients and their families every day. I bring technical skill, compassion and dedication to every case. I approach each patient as an individual and listen, communicate clearly and ensure that they and their families feel seen and supported throughout their surgical journey.

Academics and research
My academic training instilled in me a strong foundation of evidence-based practice and a passion for continual learning. This lets me participate in research focused on cardiovascular outcomes, which deepened my understanding of patient care beyond the operating room. These experiences helped shape me into the surgeon I am today and inspired me to contribute to both patient care and innovative research to help advance the field.

Consulting and Related Relationships
At The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, we support a faculty member’s research and consulting in collaboration with medical device, research and/or drug companies because a faculty member’s expertise can guide important advancements in the practice of medicine and improve patient care. In order to provide effective management of these relationships, the University requires annual disclosures from all faculty members with external interests related to their University responsibilities.
As of 11/3/2025, Dr. Alvarez has reported no relationships with companies or entities.
